Dearest Mama and Papa,
How are you? How are Iolo and Cynderyn? And how are my sheep? Please give everyone my love! I hope the new barn is still progressing well, and that the goats didn’t get stuck on the ledge this month.
I’m here! I have arrived at the Griffinwold Keep and started patrolling. We had an introduction outing today with challenges to complete and a trip to a druid grove to see if any of us had an affinity to the DAWN network.
The challenges were fun, though I struggled to find the little game pieces in the first one. The sergeant (I forget his name, so many new people!) said I did well in the scouting challenge. Apparently I was the only scout to go into the woods. I was also the only pathfinder. There were two wardens (justice priests, not mages like Caledfwlch) and an archer.
When we went to the druid grove (called the Leaf Grove, I must remember that), we encountered lots of shambling mounds. They hurt when the branches caught us! Warden Teasel and Marshall Diamond healed us though. I scouted ahead to the grove and found the druids struggling with a giant shamble. I called for the patrol and having checked we could take metal in (I have defender issued weapons right now, they seem to have a sharper edge than my bone ones) we ran in and dealt with the shamble. It hurt my leg pretty badly but I got healed by a tree afterwards so it was fine.
I have an affinity to the DAWN network! And all of us who went to the grove (not everyone did) are now brothers and sisters and welcome to visit anytime. I was then given the DAWN staff and told to lead the rite to get us back to the keep. That was a little worrying. All those people looking to me! But I asked Esus for guidance and the rite went well so I think that worked.
The lieutenant said or little group in the challenges did really well as a team, which was the important thing and we did seem to work as one, which was oddly comforting. I was in a group with Wizard Percy, Dante a priest of death which seems unusual, Warden Maidholme and Gladiator Queensbury. Gladiators are touchy in the extreme, especially about being accused of not being gentlemen.
Which reminds me, did you know, nobles in the lowlands don’t do anything? They can’t even run! Seems silly to me, they sound like a waste of space. They give lots of orders and look after their people by ordering others to do stuff. Which does work, but I don’t see why they don’t also do some of the work.
Anyway, I need to write my official report and then we are due in the mess hall for dinner with the lieutenant so I’ll sign off now.
All my love,
Eirlys xxx
P.S. I wore my coat, but it’s really warm here!
